At Penn Hospital we have one inpatient ward where we give 24-hour care and support to older people with mental health needs such as dementia, depression, and anxiety.

Our service helps people return to their homes. If someone is unable to return home, we help find appropriate accommodation in the community, according to someone’s mental and physical health needs.

During someone’s stay on our wards we make sure, as far as is possible, that they maintain some independence by doing day-to-day things such as washing and dressing themselves. Those unable to do so will be assisted by nursing staff.

We have a range of staff supporting individuals on our wards including; psychologists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists as well as our nurses, consultant psychiatrists, and health care support workers.

We also arrange for people to get help from social workers should the need arise. When we begin planning for someone to return home or into the community, social workers help us make sure that the person’s social needs will be met when they are no longer in our care. For instance, social workers can help get funding for people who are looking to find a residential care home.

When we feel someone can be discharged from the hospital, we try to make sure that their future well-being is planned for. To do this we hold a meeting to discuss someone’s being discharged. Where possible, the person being discharged will attend this meeting, as well as several staff. Other people who may come to the meeting are the person’s family, carer, and social workers.

If someone is going back home we will make a care package for that person. If appropriate, we refer the person to one of our community-based services.

What about carers and families?

Families and carers are invited to attend meetings where we discuss someone’s care. Families and carers also help us learn about someone’s life history so we can plan the right kind of care for that person.

We take referrals from Wolverhampton Hospital hospital wards, casualty, residential or private care homes, social workers, community nurses, and staff at our own services.

Referrals always come from health professionals, and all referrals go to our consultant psychiatrists.

Staff will be working on the wards 24-hours a day, 7 days a week.
