The MacArthur Centre Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) supports adult males with severe mental health conditions, who need a short period of intensive care to reduce risk to themselves and others enabling them to safely return to a mainstream mental health ward.

The purpose of the PICU service is to provide patient-centred multi-disciplinary care in a safe therapeutic environment for individuals who are detained under the Mental Health Act. We provide an intensive level of intervention in order to rapidly respond to an individual’s needs.

Individuals may be referred to our service when they first become unwell, or if their condition worsens during a hospital admission.

Referrals are welcome from all mental healthcare providers, commissioners, or healthcare organisations.

If you wish to use our services please contact the ward on 0121 612 8530 and one of our staff will assist you.

At the start of the referral process, you will be required to complete and submit a referral form, usually by email. This will be reviewed to ensure the referral meets our service criteria and we are able to meet the presenting clinical need. We will then contact you to arrange a transfer to the ward. You can access our referral form here.

The team recognises and understands that referrals may come at crisis point, and will require a prompt and timely response. We aim to respond to all referrals as quickly as possible – usually within 4 hours.

Visiting is suspended at present due to measures in place to control the spread of Covid-19. For details of visiting times and related information at other times, please contact the ward on 01216128530.

In the event of an emergency please contact the ward on 01216128530.
